Assistant Secretary for Women’s Health and Senior Science, Medical, and
Global Health Advisor in the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services, and as a Senior Public Health Advisor to the White House
Domestic Policy Council. As a leading advocate, policymaker, and
national spokesperson on critical health issues facing America and the
world today, Admiral Blumenthal has been named by the New York Times,
the National Library of Medicine, and the Medical Herald as one
of the most influential and important women in medicine.

Internship Title:
Health Policy Intern
Internship Description:
In this position, the
health policy intern will work closely with Rear Admiral Blumenthal on
issues including national health policy, global health, pandemic flu,
women’s health, health insurance coverage, health information
technology, and other emerging health concerns.
Duties and
Responsibilities include:
A unique opportunity
to contribute to the Center for the Study of the Presidency’s Agenda
2008 Health Care Initiative that is framing health policy
recommendations to inform the Presidential debates as well as to
help prepare the next Administration to address critical health
challenges and opportunities facing America and the world. The
health policy intern will help organize briefing sessions of leading
experts from medicine, public health, business, and government to
frame a national health policy agenda for the next President.
Contribute to the
establishment of a new global health initiative
Assist in the
development and implementation of health policy initiatives and
programs, including:
Conduct research
on national and global health and emerging health issues (e.g.
pandemic flu, obesity, women’s health, health disparities,
disease prevention, mental health, bioterrorism)
Help organize and
attend meetings and conferences with Federal agencies, public
health officials, leaders in the health care field, consumer
organizations, and international groups
Attend
Congressional hearings and national organization briefings
Apply organizational
and writing skills to the development and implementation of national
and global public health programs and initiatives
Build and update a
health website and identify new information resources
Assist in the
development and writing of memos, letters, reports, speeches, and
slide presentations, etc.
Assist in the
preparation of scientific and health policy papers and news articles
for publication and where appropriate, serve as a co-author
Gather current health
and legislative information and data
Assist in preparing
for news interviews on national and global health issues
Administrative tasks
This internship may also include a number of special exposures to Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Government such as visits to the White House, U.S. Capitol, Embassies, Federal agencies and national health organizations.
Qualifications Required:
Applicants must have
excellent writing skills, a background in health and science and
experience in internet research as well as word processing skills and
PowerPoint experience.
Geographic Location:
This internship will be full or part-time.
This internship is usually not compensated,
although stipends may be available in some circumstances.
Internship available year round.
